Anne of Green Gables

How did I never read these great books by L.M. Montgomery as a child or adolescent?!? I've just finished listening to the audiobook for Anne of Green Gables, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Anne (most definitely spelled with an 'e') is a wonderful, sweet, clever, imaginative girl. She comes to live at Green Gables (in a small town on Prince Edwards Island, Canada) as an orphan at the age of about 11. She is extremely imaginative and talkative, and she and her friends frequently get into scrapes and adventures. The characters are wonderful, the language is vivid and fanciful, and the story is endearing. If you haven't ever picked up this book, go get it at the library today. I have just reserved the sequel Anne of Avonlea audiobook, and I can't wait to go pick it up!

You might try the brand-new book that was released this spring, Before Green Gables, by Budge Wilson. It was wonderful, too!
